Hong Kong Halal Cuisine
Another halal cuisines – Hong Kong Edition
I visited Hong Kong in 2015. It’s reaaally hard to find halal food in this country, but I’ll share you several halal dishes in HK. Psst! some of them serves indigenous menu!1. Halal Dim Sum in Islamic Center, Wan Chai
Nearest landmark: Charterhouse Hotel
some of Islamic Center's dim sum |
Well, spend some extra time to explore since it’s not really easy to find this mosque. Located in Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick in Wan Chai, takes 15-20 minutes walk from Causeway Bay MTR Station. From Causeway Bay MTR Station, walk through Times Square, fly over, Bowrington Market, then a crossroads. This mosque is located behind the Charterhouse Hotel. Masjid Ammar and Osman Ramju Sadick is quite huge, and Islamic Canteen is in 5th floor.
At that time, canteen were full of customers. For lunch, we ordered fried rice (enough for 2-3 people), fried spring roll, hakau, and several other dishes – please be informed, we didn’t have any breakfast that day AND THEY OFFER FRIENDLY PRICE FOR LOW BUDGET TRAVELERS LIKE US. omg, pardon those auto capslock since we really happy to found a halal, affordable, and delicious traditional food in Hong Kong.

And it was paid off! We really love the foods. Several articles in internet says that even many non Moslem eat there, because they said that Islamic Center’s dim sum is more delicious than non halal dim sum in Hong Kong.
2. Wai Kee Roast Duck in Bowrington Market
Nearest landmark: Times Square
Wai Kee's menu |
Not far from Causeway Bay MTR Station, Wai Kee just like an oasis in a middle of Sahara *siap siap dilempar botol sama pemirsa Dahsyat*. Bowrington is filled with sellers who sell anything, including pork. Please no offend but I have to hold my breath when I walk through Bowrington Market. Wai Kee located in the right building of indoor Bowrington Market, to be exact: in the 2nd floor.
roast duck in Wai Kee! π |
We ordered roast duck and lamb curry (both with rice). The lamb curry was not really tender. In other word, duh ngapa ini alot banget cem ngunyah karet ban dalem *cem pernah aja* but thank God, the roast duck was juicy and tender. Yeaah!
3. Ebeneezer’s Kebabs and Pizzeria
I don’t really like to eat Arabian food every time I visit another country. But hey, its Hong Kong, and we don’t have a lot of halal foods choices. We eat in Ebeneezer’s two times during our trip to Hong Kong. First, when we went to Ngong Ping-Disneyland and the second was in our last night before heading back to home. We’ve tried the biryanis, pizza, Gulaab Jamun, Fries with fresh mint, and mango lassi. In my opinion, their taste was not that special. Gulaab Jamun was too sweet (or does all Gulaab Jamun taste like that?), biryani, lassi and pizza was so-so, fries tasted weird. But surprisingly, the fresh salad they served with biryani? Masya Allah, it was so good! Overall, it would be the last option to eat halal food in Hong Kong. Moreover, their price was kinda pricey btw.

4. Ma’s Restaurant
nearest landmark: Cheung Sha Wan Rd.
sorry for this bad quality photo |
located in a crossroad, looks like people in HK love Ma's. Even many locals visited Ma's in lunch time. They provide delicious food with local taste. But the price is not really friendly for us. One portion in Ma's can be shared for 2-3 person.
